Work Permit Holders in Canada Can Study Without a Study Permit Until 2026

Important Update for Work Permit Holders in Canada: Study Without a Study Permit

If you're a work permit holder in Canada, an exciting new update could make your journey here even more rewarding. On December 6, 2023, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that work permit holders who applied before June 7, 2023, can now continue their studies in Canada without needing a study permit. This new policy continues as a temporary public policy and is valid until June 27, 2026.

Who Is Eligible?

To be eligible for this study permit exemption, the following conditions apply:

  1. Valid Work Permit: You must hold a valid work permit that was applied for before June 7, 2023. This also applies to those who applied to renew their work permit before this date.
  2. Work Authorization: If you applied for a work permit extension before your previous work permit expired and have received a work authorization letter from IRCC, you are also eligible to study without a study permit.

Newcomers who applied for their work permits after June 7, 2023, are not eligible under this policy.

Key Benefits of Studying in Canada

Continuing your education in Canada offers numerous advantages, both economically and in terms of immigration benefits. Research by Statistics Canada shows that newcomers with Canadian study experience tend to perform better in the labor market compared to those without. Even one to two years after receiving permanent residence (PR), individuals who have studied in Canada earn 27% more than those who studied abroad.

Higher education can also boost your eligibility for permanent residence through programs like Express Entry. Education points on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) can significantly increase your chances of being invited to apply for PR. For example, a master’s degree could give you up to 135 points if you have a spouse or common-law partner, or 140 points without one. This can significantly improve your chances of securing permanent residency.

Additionally, provincial immigration pathways reward international graduates, offering even more opportunities for those who complete their education in Canada.

How Can You Prove Your Exemption?

If you're eligible for the study permit exemption, you'll need to provide proof to your Designated Learning Institution (DLI). Accepted documents include:

  • Your current, valid work permit.
  • The Acknowledgment of Receipt (AOR) after applying for your work permit extension.
  • Your work authorization letter.
  • An email from IRCC confirming your exemption under this policy.

Important Dates

  • Work Permit Expiry: You can study without a study permit until your work permit expires.
  • Work Permit Renewal: If your renewal application is refused, or expires, your study permit exemption will no longer apply.
  • End of Policy: The exemption is valid until June 27, 2026.
